Zyprexa

Zyprexa, made by Eli Lilly, is commonly prescribed for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Zyprexa blocks certain dopamine and serotonin receptors, which reduces symptoms of certain psychotic disorders. It is one of the most frequently prescribed drugs for this condition and is commonly associated with serious side effects including weight gain, diabetes and lipid disorders.

In 2003, the FDA required that the class of drugs known as atypical antipsychotics, including Zyprexa, include warnings about increased risk to patients of development of diabetes and hyperglycemia. A year later, a federal prosecutor announced an investigation of Eli Lilly, regarding the techniques it has used to market Zyprexa.
