Perchlorate

Perchlorate is the main ingredient in rocket and missile fuel and is often used in fireworks, air bags, leather tanning products and electronic tubes. Studies have shown that exposure to perchlorate may cause cancer, anxiety, fatigue, depression, hair loss, and unexplained weight gain. High levels of perchlorate exposure can damage the thyroid gland, affecting metabolism and development in children and mental retardation, hearing, and motor problems in fetuses. With these health risks in mind, it is quite unnerving that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) suspects that the drinking water supply in 22 states is contaminated with perchlorate. Currently, the EPA is collecting nationwide water samples to determine the extent of such contamination.
