Meridia

Meridia, a diet drug manufactured by Abbott Laboratories, has recently come under scrutiny after the consumer advocacy group, Public Citizen, issued a letter to the Federal Drug Administrator (FDA) in 2002 requesting that the drug be taken off the market. Public Citizen contends that Meridia has been linked to the deaths of at least 29 patients and that the drug is associated with serious side effects, including increased risk of cardiovascular problems. In 1996, before Meridia was approved by the FDA, an FDA advisory committee urged the organization not to approve the weight loss drug. The research by the FDA noted significant side effects to the drug, including elevated blood pressure. Despite this recommendation, the FDA later approved use of Meridia.
