Lead

Lead is a highly toxic substance that can produce a wide range of adverse health effects to those exposed to it. Both adults and children can suffer from the effects of lead poisoning, but childhood lead poisoning is more frequent and most damaging .

Exposure to lead-based paint is the major cause of lead poisoning for children in the United States. Since there is no safe level of lead in the body, even small amounts of exposure can lead to disastrous results. Lead-based paint is particularly serious in cities and urban areas where housing is the oldest. Any lead-based paint can become a hazard if it begins to peel, chip or otherwise generate dust.

People are also exposed to lead through deteriorating paint, household dust, bare soil, air, drinking water, food, ceramics, home remedies, hair dyes and other cosmetics.

You and your loved ones are protected under the Lead-Based Paint Hazard Reduction Act of 1992, known as Title X. One of its most important requirements is the disclosure of known lead hazards at the time of the sale or lease of a home built before 1978. Sellers and landlords must also provide a pamphlet on lead poisoning to the buyer or renter before the pre-1978 property is sold or rented. Most local codes prohibit chipping and peeling paint conditions and it is important that these codes are enforced at the local and state level.
