Large Ballast

Ballast is coarse gravel or crushed rock laid to form a bed for roads or railroads. Railroad workers who are required to walk on ballast experience lower extremity musculoskeletal disorders and injuries such as severe arthritis of the hips and lower legs including knees, ankles and feet. Ballast rock comes in different sizes and railroads have established guidelines for ballast size specifying that smaller ballast be used in the yards where more walking takes place since it causes less injury. Often times safe ballast guidelines are ignored and railroad workers must routinely still walk on large ballasts, especially when performing tasks such as inspections.
