Diesel Fumes

Diesel engines are used by an increasing number of railroad locomotives, placing railroad employees at high risk to diesel exhaust, which is made up of soot and gases that may contain thousands of different chemical substances. Under the Federal Employers Liability Act (FELA), a railroad has a duty to provide its employees with a reasonably safe place to work, which includes protecting employees from exposure to diesel fumes.

There are two chemical diseases one can contract from diesel exhaust exposure; obstructive lung disease and cancer. Diesel exhaust soot consists of very small particles that can be inhaled and deposited in the lungs. These particles carry cancer-causing substances known as polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Gases in diesel exhaust, such as nitrous oxide, nitrogen dioxide, formaldehyde, Benzene, sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide can also create health problems.

Workers exposed to high concentrations of diesel exhaust have reported the following short-term health symptoms: irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat, lightheadedness, heartburn, headache, weakness, numbness, tingling in extremities, wheezing, and vomiting.

James F. Humphreys & Associates will ensure the railroads are responsible for respiratory symptoms (such as persistent cough and mucous), bronchitis, and reduced lung capacity suffered by workers exposed to diesel fumes. It is important that you contact us immediately if you are suffering from diesel exhaust exposure since there are statutes of limitations on FELA-related cases.

If you or a loved one has been exposed to diesel fumes and are now suffering from its effects, contact the attorneys of James F. Humphreys & Associates. Fill out your free case evaluator now.
