The Brigham Mesothelioma Staging System
A Guide to the Stages of Mesothelioma.
The Brigham System stages mesothelioma based on whether surgery can remove the tumor and whether it has reached the lymph nodes:
- Stage I: Surgery can be performed and the cancer has not reached any lymph nodes.
- Stage II: The cancer has reached the lymph nodes, but surgery can remove the tumor.
- Stage III: Surgery cannot be performed. The cancer has spread into the heart or chest wall, through the diaphragm or into the abdominal cavity. It may or may not have spread to lymph nodes past the chest.
- Stage IV: The disease has spread to other body parts.
