Encapsulation of Asbestos

A Guide to the Neutralization of Asbestos Products

  • Encapsulation of Asbestos

Another form of asbestos removal is encapsulation. This method covers the surface of the asbestos material with a painted coating or new material. For instance, many asbestos-containing floor tiles are covered with new, sheet vinyl tile. This method reduces the risk of asbestos fiber release without completely removing the asbestos-containing material.

Asbestos that has been encapsulated must be regularly inspected to make sure fibers are not being released into the air. If the material becomes damaged after encapsulation, it should be repaired as soon as possible. Unfortunately, if the asbestos needs to be removed after encapsulation, it may become difficult. In addition, the long-term expense of encapsulation may be higher than complete, initial removal.
