Biphasic Mesothelioma Cancer
Three Types of Malignant Mesothelioma Cells
The three categories of mesothelioma cancer cells are as follows:
- Biphasic mesothelioma cancer
- Epithelioid mesothelioma cancer
- Sarcomatoid mesothelioma cancer
Biphasic mesothelioma is a combination of sarcomatoid mesothelioma and epithelioid mesothelioma. Approximately 20% to 38% of mesothelioma patients have this form of mesothelioma. Biphasic mesothelioma does not have a distinctive cell pattern, but contains a mix of sarcomatoid and epithelioid mesothelioma cells.
Cases of biphasic mesothelioma have risen over the years. The disease once made up 25% of all mesothelioma cases, but has recently risen as high as 46% to 63%.
Treatment for biphasic mesothelioma is the same as those used for sarcomatoid and epithelioid mesothelioma. However, patients with biphasic mesothelioma often opt for experimental treatments because the survival time for this form of mesothelioma is shorter.
