A Guide to the Neutralization of Asbestos Products

If you suspect asbestos is present in your home, leave it alone if it is in good condition. If the material has not been disturbed, it will not release fibers. Asbestos only becomes dangerous when it releases fibers, which can be inhaled or ingested and cause asbestos-related diseases.

Make sure you routinely inspect the asbestos-containing material. Do not touch the material but look for abrasions, water damage or tears, which may indicate disturbance. Do not hit, handle or rub the material, as this may damage it and allow asbestos fibers to be released.

If the material appears slightly damaged, limit access to that area. Throw away damaged stove-top pads, ironing board covers and asbestos gloves. Speak with local health departments to find out how to appropriately dispose of asbestos materials.

If the material appears significantly damaged or if home renovations will damage it, hire a professional to remove, enclose or encapsulate the material.
